Petrolia Town Council voted unanimously last night to designate the Standpipe Water Tower under part 4 of the Ontario Heritage Act.
This is great news! The tower's fate was uncertain and there was a danger it might have been torn down.
This iconic structure will now receive the protection it rightly deserves, as an important monument to Petrolia's industrial and civic development.
In it's day, the Petrolia Waterworks was an engineering feat. With local wells prone to contamination by oil, waterborne diseases were a constant threat and procuring safe drinking water and pressurized water for firefighting was a constant challenge. The lack of a reliable water supply held the town's development and population back.
By constructing a pumping station at Lake Huron and a pipeline from the lake to the town and the standpipe for storage and pressurization, Petrolia acquired one of the most advanced waterworks of its time and a ready supply of pristine Lake Huron water in 1897.
