Blackwell Community Hall (north elevation). The hall was built as the first church for the parish of St. John's Anglican on the northeast corner of Devine and Margaret Streets in Sarnia. This building was used as the parish hall after the construction of St. John's Church in 1907. In 1923, a new parish hall was constructed. The building pictured was moved to Blackwell across the road from the original Primitive Methodist Church (built in 1880 and still standing). The community hall was a project spearheaded by the Blackwell Women's Institute. The hall was opened in May, 1925. (photo taken on Jan. 26, 1985) (information from: Phelps, Charles S. The building was constructed and opened for worship on Sun. Feb. 28, 1892. It was first known as St. George's Mission Chapel and came under the jurisdiction of St. George's Anglican Church. In May, 1898, the mission applied to the Diocese of Huron to become recognized as a parish. This was granted and it became known as St. John's. The church was enlarged in 1899 and re-opened on Aug. 27, 1899. (Source: Sarnia Canadian Observer, Sat. Dec. 4, 1926, pg. 1)
